OSHS student brings Mini Therapy horses to support Senior wellness

As part of her English in Action Community Action Project, Old Saybrook High School Student Katie Ludwig worked to host a community event at The Old Saybrook Estuary to highlight the positive impact therapy animals can have on seniors' mental health and social connection. This event took place on April 6th from 3:00 to 4:00 PM and featured the Minis on the Move therapy horses from High Hopes therapeutic riding. Seniors at the Estuary had the opportunity to meet and interact with the horses, while learning more about how therapy animals can improve emotional well-being and reduce feelings of loneliness.

Katie organized this event by focusing on the growing issue of loneliness and social isolation among older adults. Research shows that many seniors experience isolation due to life changes such as losing loved ones, decreased mobility, or fewer opportunities for social interaction. A 2023 national poll found that about 37% of adults ages 50-80 report frequent loneliness, which can contribute to increased risks of depression, anxiety, heart disease, and cognitive decline.

To help bring awareness to this issue in the local community, Katie partnered with High Hopes Therapeutic Riding and staff at the Estuary in Old Saybrook to organize an event that combined education with hands-on experience. During the visit, seniors were able to interact with the miniature therapy horses while learning about the benefits of animal-assisted therapy. Katie also shared research in a slideshow explaining how interaction with therapy animals can reduce stress, improve mood, and encourage social engagement.

This event created a positive and engaging experience for participants while highlighting the emotional and social benefits therapy animals can provide. By bringing the High Hopes “Minis on the Move” program to the Old Saybrook Estuary, Katie helped introduce seniors to new opportunities, encouraging further human -therapy animal connection and interaction, bettering seniors' mental health and social connection.
