On Wednesday, September 9, a Career Pathways leadership team from Old Saybrook High School - Associate Principal David Plotkin, STEM Pathways Coordinator Karen Dionne, and Tech Ed teacher Cliff Taylor - joined Board of Education members Marijke Kehrhahn and Jane Wisialowski for a shop floor tour of Sound Manufacturing/Monster Equipment, an advanced manufacturing firm located in Old Saybrook. Dr. Kelli Vallieres, Owner and Chair of Sound's Board of Directors, shared the history of Old Saybrook High School's partnership with Sound, introduced a number of Sound employees who demonstrated their work, and offered many ideas for collaboration. Dr. Vallieres told the visitors that Sound has always been a family-owned shop, located in Old Saybrook for the last 20 years, that offers family-friendly resources and work schedules. Our heads were full of great ideas by the time we left - we look forward to building a productive partnership!
Old Saybrook Public Schools students delivered strong results on the most recent Smarter Balanced Assessment, with significant gains across multiple grade levels and subjects. We are proud of the hard work of our students and staff and encouraged by what these results say about the progress happening across our schools.

Former United States Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona joined Old Saybrook Public Schools for Convocation and spent time with our Pathways Coordinators as the district moves from planning into implementation. His message about hands-on learning, student exploration and teacher ownership closely connects to the work underway across Goodwin, OSMS and OSHS.

Law Enforcement Emergency Response Training will be conducted on Monday, August 17, 2026, and Friday, August 21, 2026. The campuses for Goodwin School and the Old Saybrook Middle School (buildings and grounds) will be closed both days from 4:00 PM through 10:00 PM. The campus for the Old Saybrook High School (buildings and grounds) will be closed both days from 6:00 PM through 10:00 PM. It is important that no one be on the grounds at those times.
Reminder: The Old Saybrook Board of Education will hold a special meeting this Thursday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m. for the purpose of a literacy presentation and discussion.

Following graduation, our seniors will take part in the annual Graduation Parade. The parade is expected to begin around 6:30 p.m., approximately 15 minutes after graduation ends.

Due to the extreme heat, Goodwin School and Old Saybrook Middle School will operate on an early release schedule for Friday, June 12th. Transportation for Goodwin and Old Saybrook Middle School will operate under a normal early release schedule. There will be no change to Old Saybrook High School's exam schedule and the release time will remain at 12:15. A separate bus run will be provided for Old Saybrook High School students after the second exam.
Old Saybrook High School Juniors Alexa Cardello and Sylvie Webber are presented with a General Assembly Citation by State Representative Devin Carney for their exemplary civic leadership with Ms President US Old Saybrook. Alexa and Sylvie have contributed over 200 hours of dedicated volunteer service helping to expand and strengthen the chapter and, most importantly, mentor, inspire and empower our local middle school girls in civic leadership, public speaking, and community engagement.
OSHS sophomore Bryce Foster has used his passion for photography to capture iconic Old Saybrook scenes that showcase the beauty of our town. With support from local photographer Nate Salter as a mentor, Bryce’s work has helped bring coastal charm to the entrance of Old Saybrook High School and has also been featured as part of the school’s new P.I.E.R. imagery.

Yesterday, 17 Old Saybrook students attended the Ms President Rock the Capitol event in Hartford.
Students spent the day touring the State Capitol and the Connecticut Democracy Center, followed by a working lunch with State Senators and State Representatives, including Old Saybrook State Representative Devin Carney.
The group included 12 Old Saybrook Middle School students and 5 Old Saybrook High School students, who served as leaders and mentors throughout the experience.
We are also proud to share that Old Saybrook High School student Rosalin Gehret received a citation from Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz in recognition of her work raising awareness and support around the transition from middle school to high school as the current elected Old Saybrook Ms President.
We are proud of these students for representing Old Saybrook with leadership, purpose, and civic engagement.

This week, our Old Saybrook High School and Grade 8 students had the opportunity to hear from Chris Herren, founder of The Herren Project.
Chris shared his powerful personal journey of how addiction took hold behind the scenes of a successful basketball career, and how recovery gave him a second chance at life. Through an honest, direct message, he spoke about choices, consequences, and the importance of seeking support.
Students described the presentation as “powerful” and said it “gave them a different perspective,” noting that Chris spoke to them like adults: real, respectful, and impactful.
We’re grateful to Chris Herren for helping our students reflect on decision-making, personal responsibility, and making healthy choices. Opportunities like this support student growth both inside and outside the classroom.
